Origin
Guarana originates from the heart of the Amazon region of Brazil. Discovered by an indigenous tribe of Guarani Indians, it was used for its various properties. Its seeds were already being used in phytotherapy during pre-Columbian times, that is over 2,000 years B.C:. for combating fatigue and controlling the appetite during periods of famine or long forest expeditions. In Europe, the guarani wasn’t discovered until the 19th century, but it become popular quickly, particularly in drink form.
Did you know?
Just before ripening, guarani has a rather strange appearance as the shell breaks and reveals a white core with a black protrusion at its centre which resembles an eyeball. This is why it was named “the Eye of the forest”.
Characteristics
Guarana is a climbing plant with a fluted stem and large leaves with five oval leaflets. It resembles a creeper that climbs up other trees. The flowers are greenish in colour and arranged in clusters. The bright red fruit are made of capsules that contain a black oval-shaped seed. The seed is bulky and surrounded by red fleshy skin, which gives it the appearance of an eyeball. In phytotherapy, only the seeds contained in the dried fruits are used.
Flowering and harvesting
The plant grows naturally in the forest, attracting birds that are very fond of its berries. Once ripe, the fruit are harvested in September then dried before the seeds are removed. These are then grilled and husked. They are then ground with water to form a paste which is then smoked and grated before use. Guarana seeds can also be dried and roasted before being ground into powder. They naturally contain caffeine.
Benefits
The guarani seed contains around 3.5% to 5% caffeine. It also contains small quantities of theobromine and theophylline, starch and tannins.1
