Cinchona

Origin

Originating in the Andean Cordillera, cinchona can be found in Colombia and Bolivia at altitudes of between 600 and 3500 metres. The properties of its bark have been recognised in Europe since the 17th century.  In 1817, two French pharmacists, pioneered the process of isolating quinine from cinchona bark, this product has been marketed since 1830

 

 

Description

The cinchona is a small tree that grow up to 8 to 10 metres in height. Its leaves are slightly reddish in the lower section. The surface of the bark is grey while the inside is brown-red, or yellow.

 

The cihchona bark which is rich in quinine is used in phytotherapy.
